Software Engineer, Live, The New York Times, NY, US

Job Description

The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.

About The Role

The Live team at The New York Times is looking for a full-stack software engineer eager to work in a news-driven environment. You will be offered the opportunity to shape impactful experiences for our readers and build the next-generation suite of systems and services that power The Times' breaking news coverage.

You will join a cross-functional team of engineers, designers, and product managers. Your primary focus will be on solidifying our position as the go-to news destination during breaking news by creating a more dynamic news report across surfaces, which includes formats such as Live Blog, Live Chat, and Storyline Feed. Beyond meeting the evolving live coverage needs of the newsroom and our readers, a key aspect of your work will involve simplifying and modernizing the underlying architecture. This includes improving system stability, accelerating development, and migrating to next-generation systems as part of broader modernization efforts, all while ensuring unparalleled system reliability and high availability during critical news moments. You will report to the Engineering Manager on the Live team.

The core technologies used on our team include React, JavaScript, TypeScript, Node.js, Java, Go, Express, GraphQL and Firestore.

Responsibilities

  • Lead feature development from technical design to production operation, serving both our readers and internal users (editors), adapting to the rapid pace of the news cycles to seize breaking opportunities.
  • Work across the full stack, build systems in modern technologies, write high-quality code, and continuously expand your skill set.
  • Collaborate with designers and product managers to prototype news-driven features, and evolve them into scalable systems.
  • Collaborate with other engineers and teams to execute platform migrations as part of ongoing modernization effort.
  • Ensure features you create are reliable, scalable and secure, in partnership with your project team.
  • Deploy, operate and troubleshoot your code in collaboration with the broader team.
  • Operate with a product engineering mindset, contributing insights to bridge technical and product aspects to enhance reader and news needs.
  • Provide production support to the newsroom for live coverage by participating in on-call rotations for the tools we build.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

Basic Qualifications

  • Full-stack technical background with expertise in one or more areas of the stack
  • 2+ years of experience building large-scale full-stack web applications and features using modern JavaScript frameworks (React, Angular, Vue') and backend languages (Node.js, Java, Go)
  • 2+ years of experience with web fundamentals (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, web performance, accessibility)
  • Familiarity with one or more persistence technologies (SQL, NoSQL, Firestore)
  • Familiarity with troubleshooting and resolving issues in a production environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience utilizing public cloud platform services such as Google Cloud Platform (GCP)
  • Experience with DevOps practices, including CI/CD techniques and tooling (e.g. Drone, Jenkins), automated testing and deployments, observability and monitoring
  • Understanding of caching and content delivery
  • Experience with operating in an agile and nimble environment

This role requires limited on-call hours. An on-call schedule will be determined when you join, taking into account team size and other variables.
