Job Overview

The Public Relations & Communications Specialist plays a hands-on role in creating and executing external communications initiatives that promote and protect the reputation of Children’s Hospital Colorado (CHCO). Produces content across channels, manages media outreach, and supports campaigns that align with broader brand and business objectives. Specialists are expected to bring creative thinking, media savvy, and technical writing skills to their work, while collaborating closely with Strategists, Managers, and Directors to ensure alignment with organizational priorities.

Shift: Days. Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm

Job Status: Hybrid (on-site minimum two days per week), full-time salaried

Essential Functions

An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions. These examples do not include all of the functions which the employee may be expected to perform.

  • Develops content such as press releases, media pitches, talking points, and social media copy aligned with campaign goals and brand standards.
  • Executes earned media efforts by researching new and cultivating existing media contacts, coordinating interviews, and tracking coverage.
  • Supports public relations campaigns by managing project details, timelines, and deliverables with minimal oversight.
  • Provides creative input on messaging strategy and identifies story opportunities that advance brand visibility.
  • Collaborates with cross-functional MarCom partners (marketing, digital, service lines) to ensure communications are integrated and consistent.
  • Conducts interviews, background research, and fact-checking with providers, patients and other SMEs as needed to support content development and accuracy.
  • Assists in securing data and preparing data-informed reports and presentations on communications performance, reach and effectiveness.
  • Ensures consistent application of CHCO brand voice, tone, and visual identity across external communications.
  • Builds and maintains working relationships with local and national media contacts by being highly responsive, meeting deadlines and acting with professionalism.

SCOPE AND LEVEL

  • Guidelines: Developmental, standard, or intermediate level. Guidelines are generally numerous, well established, and directly applicable to the work assignment. Work assignment and desired results are explained by general oral or written instructions.
  • Complexity: Falls between the entry and full performance/senior level. Duties assigned are generally repetitive and restricted in scope but may be of substantial intricacy. Employee primarily applies standardized practices.
  • Decision Making: Decisions or recommendations on non-standardized situations are limited to relating organizational policies to specific cases. Brings non routine issues to supervisor. Problems that are not covered by guidelines or that are without precedent are taken up with the supervisor.
  • Communications: Contacts with team members, clients or the public where explanatory or interpretive information is exchanged, gathered, or presented and some degree of discretion and judgment are required within the parameters of the job function.
  • Supervision Received : Under normal supervision, within a standardized work situation, the employee performs duties common to the line of work without close supervision or detailed instruction. Work product is subject to continual review.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, English, or a related field.
  • Experience: Two (2) years of relevant experience in agency or corporate marketing environment
  • Equivalency: Four (4) years of experience, beyond stated requirements, may substitute for the Bachelor’s degree

Salary Information

Pay is dependent on applicant's relevant experience.

Annual Salary Range (Based on 40 hours worked per week): $66,083.89 to $99,125.84
