Position Summary

The Industry Relations Project Manager is a full-time position, reporting directly to the Director of Industry Relations. The Project Manager will work with the Industry Relations group on launching Columbia’s centrally-based university-wide industry relations efforts, in support of and collaboration with the industry relations teams and initiatives at the Schools and Centers.

The Industry Relations Group Will Prioritize Amongst And Then Execute Upon Many Initiatives To Increase Columbia’s Interactivity With And Support From Industry. Example Initiatives May Include

Support the Deans, Center Directors, and Department Chairs for meetings with senior industry executives Create standardized and shared marketing material Create and maintain a customer relationship management (CRM) database Perform research for prospective discussions with industry Support the creation of industry affiliate programs around specific research areas Streamline and serve as concierge for high-priority industry agreements Increase utilization of Columbia’s core facilities by industry Create and host events, panels, and advisory councils of interest to industry Stay abreast of best in class industry relations models at peer institutions and reflect, build and evolve the Columbia model to improve sponsored research, tech transfer and philanthropic investment returns Other initiatives TBD

The Industry Relations team will work closely with many departments and schools across Columbia, and will be housed within Columbia Technology Ventures (CTV). CTV is the technology transfer office for Columbia University and a central location for many of the technology development initiatives, entrepreneurial activities, external industry collaborations, and commercially-oriented multidisciplinary technology innovations across the university. CTV’s core mission is to facilitate the transfer of inventions from academic research labs to the market for the benefit of society on a local, national, and global basis. Each year, CTV manages more than 350 invention disclosures, 100 license deals, and 20 new IP-backed start-ups, involving over 750 inventors across Columbia's campuses. CTV currently has over 1200 patent assets available for licensing, across research fields such as bio, IT, clean tech, devices, big data, nanotechnology, materials science, and more. CTV will provide many supporting resources to ensure the Industry Relations team is as successful as possible

The Industry Relations Project Manager will report to the Columbia Director of Industry Relations, and will work closely with the Executive Steering Committee for Industry Relations, as well as with stakeholders across Columbia schools and departments.

Responsibilities

Conducts benchmarking research to identify potential industry partners, drafts research reports on corporations Convenes monthly meetings of stakeholders at Columbia Maintains and updates a library of university policies and how-to guides around academic/industry partnerships Researches, develops and implements best practices for engaging with industry, federal, and philanthropic organizations for strategic partnerships and federally-funded grant proposals Establishes and maintains marketing and communications channels (website, pitch decks, marketing one-pagers, databases, newsletter, mailing list, etc.) Acts as an internal consultant for research, development, and corporate relations teams across the university on projects involving industry relations Assists in operational planning and execution for various activities related to strategic industry engagements, including the development of processes for tracking and streamlining the execution of partnerships Develops and manages strong relationships with faculty members and other researchers Additional responsibilities as needed

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and/or equivalent minimum related experience. Minimum of 2 years of experience. The most important criteria for this job are an ability to multi-task effectively and efficiently, and project management skills to track projects over time at varying degrees of detail. Accordingly, the candidate must have outstanding organizational skills and be extremely detail-oriented. Experience at working both independently and in a team-oriented, collaborative environment is essential. The candidate must be able to conform to shifting priorities, demands and timelines through analytical and problem-solving capabilities, and react to project adjustments and alterations promptly and efficiently. The candidate must be able to interact respectfully and engagingly in oral and written form with a wide variety of stakeholders, including Columbia’s project administrators, faculty, and external academic and industry representatives.

Preferred Qualifications

Science Ph.D., JD, MBA, or other graduate degree strongly preferred.
