Lead Writer and Storytelling Strategist, Stowers Institute for Medical Research, MO, US

The Stowers Institute for Medical Research is looking for a Lead Writer and Storytelling Strategist to be responsible for crafting compelling stories that share the Institute’s mission, discoveries, and scientific vision with external and internal audiences. This individual will be an exceptional writer and editor who thrives on translating complex science into engaging, accessible content across multiple platforms. They will develop feature stories and website articles through a storytelling lens and assist with press releases, media pitches, and original pieces for digital and print channels.

As both a creative strategist and hands-on storyteller, this individual will help guide the Institute’s editorial direction, ensuring that stories not only inform but also inspire. They should have a deep passion for scientific discovery with a curiosity-driven approach to their writing. The candidate should also possess strong editorial instincts and the ability to work collaboratively with scientists and leadership to surface powerful narratives.

The Lead Writer and Storytelling Strategist will supervise the Senior Science Writer, ensuring consistency, creativity, and impact across platforms. This position reports to the Director of Communications.

Key Responsibilities

• Write and edit compelling, accessible stories that highlight discoveries, milestones, and breakthroughs across the Institute.
• Shape and implement storytelling strategy, identifying themes and opportunities to elevate the Institute’s voice in the scientific community, scientific-curious public and beyond.
• Develop press releases, media pitches, and outreach materials that resonate with journalists and target audiences.
• Produce content for the Institute’s website, digital channels, and printed publications.
• Collaborate closely with scientists and stakeholders to identify story opportunities and gather accurate information.
• Oversee and mentor the Senior Science Writer, providing editorial guidance and support.
• Measure the impact of storytelling and media outreach, offering insights and recommendations for continuous improvement.
• Provide flexible support across the communications team as needed.
  
  

Education And Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Communications, or related field.
• 7+ years of experience in writing, journalism, or communications, with a strong focus on editorial leadership.
• Proven ability to translate technical or scientific concepts for general audiences.
• Exceptional writing and editing skills across formats and platforms.
• Comfort with multimedia storytelling (text, video, images, sound).
• Experience managing content strategy for digital and print communications.
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects at once.
• Analytical mindset with the ability to measure and improve impact.
• Demonstrated success working with diverse stakeholders.
  
  

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of the media landscape and science journalism is a plus.
