Job Description

The City of Friendswood is currently accepting applications for a full-time IT Support Specialist, in the Information Technology Department. This position will perform advanced work supporting computer operating systems software and system administration; work involves installing and maintaining systems software and hardware; generating and applying fixes (patches) to the operating system and related software packages. Performs activities associated with a local area network (LAN) and wide area network (WAN); work involves network installation, support and maintenance, training, monitoring and analysis of existing hardware and software, and evaluation of potential network enhancements.

  • Work Performed:
  • Network: installs, configures and maintains hardware including LAN/WAN, firewalls, IDS/IPS, routers/switches, wireless, servers, printers & scanners; maintains user accounts; establishes shared folders; performs troubleshooting; monitors traffic, performance and disk storage, and prepares reports for review by the Deputy Director of Administrative Services - IT; performs routine backup of data; coordinates installation and maintenance of cabling; prepares and maintains documentation; provides users with technical support and responds to needs and questions of users concerning their access of network resources communicates and coordinates network schedule, backups, and downtime to users; knowledge of maintaining Fiber and Ethernet cabling.
  • Computers: installs, configures and maintains hardware and software including, but not limited to, operating system, drivers, office productivity, applications, terminal emulation, anti-virus, email/fax, remote access and Internet, performs troubleshooting of hardware, software, and cabling; coordinates third-party maintenance of hardware, provides users with technical support.
  • Servers: knowledge of Microsoft Server technologies such as Windows Server, Active Directory, DHCP, DNS, Exchange, SQL and Linux; configures and maintains Enterprise Anti-Virus program; sets up group policies and manages compliances.
  • Website: maintain city website, work with appropriate departments to comply with set standards and guidelines.
  • VoIP: knowledge of VoIP phone system, maintain and document phone system records.
  • Security Camera Systems: knowledge and maintenance of analog and IP based security camera systems.

Education and Experience : Four year college or university program certificate in computer science or related field; or three to five years of related experience (Microsoft NT, Office, Windows) and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Requirements: Valid Texas drivers' license with a good driving record.

Schedules Working Hours: Full time 40+ hour work week, occasional weekend assignments and ability to be on-call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Position may require 24 hour availability during emergency conditions.
