Description Of Position

The Department of Biological Sciences at Northeastern State University (NSU) is currently

seeking a biologist specializing in evolutionary parasitology for a tenure-track position at the

rank of Assistant Professor or higher. NSU is a predominantly undergraduate university of

approximately 6,000 students. The main campus is located in Tahlequah, Oklahoma with branch

campuses in Broken Arrow and Muskogee. The Department of Biological Sciences within the

Gregg Wadley College of Science and Health Professions features modern facilities housed in

the recently constructed and well-equipped science complexes in both Tahlequah and Broken

Arrow. Northeastern State University traces its roots back to the founding of the original

Cherokee National Female Seminary in 1851, establishing NSU as a leader in education in

Oklahoma. The City of Tahlequah, located in the foothills of the picturesque Ozark Mountains in

eastern Oklahoma, remains the capital of the Cherokee Nation. The Broken Arrow campus is

located approximately 50 miles from the Tahlequah campus and is noted as a modern center of

higher education in the Tulsa metro area.

Responsibilities

  • The successful candidate will teach courses in the biology programs including Animal

Parasitology, Animal Systematics (preference for birds and/or herps, but any group of

animals is welcome), Evolution, and may include courses in Animal Biology,

introductory level biology lectures and labs, non-majors biology, and upper-level elective

offerings in Biology, depending on the successful candidate's area of expertise. Teaching

assignments may include both day and evening classes, teaching on multiple campuses,

distance learning classes, and online or blended formats. While this position will be based

on the Tahlequah campus, teaching responsibilities may extend to other NSU campuses

as needed.

  • Be engaged in scholarly activities, which may include an externally funded research

program that involves undergraduate students.

  • Advise students.
  • Serve on department, college, and university committees.
  • Possible participation in community outreach opportunities.
  • Perform other service duties typically associated with university faculty.

Experience

Demonstrated excellence in facilitating learning through teaching at the undergraduate level.

Publication record in the field of expertise.

Capacity to develop a student-centered research program in the candidate’s area of expertise.

Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Ability and desire to mentor and teach students from diverse cultural, ethnic, educational, and

economic backgrounds.

Educational Requirements

Ph.D. in biology, ecology, evolution, or related field at the time of hire. ABDs considered.

Doctorate required for tenure track and rank of assistant professor.
